In this VladTV interview, Ramon “Mundo” Mendoza breaks down the prison history behind the Norteño–Sureño conflict and challenges common myths about how it began. Mendoza explains that Nuestra Familia was already active by 1965 in Soledad, before the 1968 “Shoe War” often linked to the split. He details how tensions with the Mexican Mafia escalated after Hector Padilla of San Jose confronted Robert “Robot” Salas over stolen shoes, leading to violence that exposed deeper divisions inside California prisons.
Mendoza also discusses Soledad, San Quentin, Shallow Hernandez, “Widow” Morgan, IGI Hankins, and how recruitment among inmates from Fresno, San Jose, Salinas, Stockton and other Northern California areas helped shape the later Norteño identity. He explains why the North-South divide, in his view, developed around 1970–71 rather than during the original 1968 incident. Mendoza also references his book, *The Shoe War*, on the history of Norteños vs. Sureños.

Damn Chapelle wasn’t lying in that episode
And back then many Northerners
would say Ese to each other
and some Southern California
gangs would wear red bananas,
Big D and Kilroy told me this.
Red bandanas in prison
and the streets.
I don’t blame them. And I know some of you ain’t going to like this… “even though San Fernando Valley is LA County.” Many Los gangs have thought they were better and more gangster than us Valleros. Los gangs ain’t the only ones with some of the oldest varrios and the only ones in front of the line when riots are happening. No matter what, we are all brown just from different sides.
Nothing but job security and money makers for billionaires who profit off you they win and you lose especially reality they knew what they were doing handing out blue bandannas to inmates that’s right they gave you that color 🔵🔴
