If you have been following the controversy around Meta’s Ray-Ban AI smart glasses, there is finally a meaningful update worth knowing about. These glasses feature a built-in capture LED, a small light on the front designed to signal to anyone nearby when the camera is actively recording. The concept was straightforward — transparency for bystanders. But users quickly discovered a loophole that completely undermined that intention. If you started recording while the LED was visible and then covered it mid-recording, the camera kept going. Secretly. In public. Without anyone around you having any idea. Meta has now addressed this with a mandatory software update. Recording will automatically stop the moment the LED is covered at any point during filming, eliminating the ability to secretly continue recording after obscuring the light. Meta also confirmed that several businesses that had been openly selling LED-tampering kits specifically designed to help people record without detection have already shut down. The company has additionally launched a public awareness campaign to help people understand what the blinking light actually means when they spot it on someone’s glasses in public. But privacy advocates are not entirely satisfied, and their reasoning is hard to dismiss. The LED was arguably never sufficient protection to begin with. It is small, genuinely easy to miss in a crowded bar or on a busy street, and the vast majority of people still have no idea what it signifies when they see it. Closing this specific loophole is a meaningful step forward. But it does not resolve the fundamental underlying problem — that a growing number of people are walking around in public spaces with cameras mounted on their faces, and the only protection available to bystanders is a light roughly the size of a pinhead.
