PizzaFLIX Presents SILENT MOVIE SUNDAY
Men Without Women (1930)

Director: John Ford
Starring: Kenneth MacKenna, Frank Albertson, Paul Page
Writers: Dudley Nichols, James Kevin McGuinness
Studio: Fox Film

🍕INTERNATIONAL SOUND VERSION🍕
Men Without Women (1930), director John Ford’s early sound-era submarine drama from Fox Film Corp., survives only in a rare international export workprint. Starring Kenneth MacKenna, Frank Albertson, and Paul Page, this little-seen John Ford film showcases the director’s developing themes of courage, sacrifice, and male camaraderie long before his legendary Westerns defined his career. Written by Dudley Nichols, John Ford, and James Kevin McGuinness, the film also features cinematography by Joseph August and production design by William S. Darling.

Set in the China Sea, Men Without Women follows a group of American sailors recalled from Shanghai nightlife to their submarine under the command of Bridewell. After a devastating collision sends the vessel to the ocean floor, tensions rise as the trapped crew confronts fear, loyalty, and survival. A disgraced British naval officer ultimately risks everything in a final act of redemption and bravery.

This surviving print is especially significant as an unfinished English-language workprint of the film’s international sound version, featuring an unusual blend of synchronized sound scenes, silent passages, intertitles, and fragmented music cues—offering a fascinating glimpse into early sound cinema and export-version production practices.

It has dated (1930 is a long time ago), it remains fairly entertaining, and if anyone is wondering, yes, that is John Wayne, before he was John Wayne

Interesting that they still made silent versions of films as late as 1930! Thanks for the rarity. Too bad the sound version is lost, seeing that it’s a John Ford film. BTW, this film pre-dates when an American sub went down and all were rescued using a diving bell. 1939: On 23 May the Sargo-class submarine USS Squalus sank in 240 feet (73 m) during trials at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
