The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that states can count late-arriving mailed ballots, rejecting a Trump-led challenge. The decision rejected a Republican-led attack on laws in more than half the states and the District of Columbia that permit mailed ballots to arrive and be counted some number of days after the election, provided they are postmarked by Election Day. The court’s decision spares election officials having to change their ballot rules just a few months before the 2026 midterm congressional elections.
The U.S. Postal Service may not deliver mail-in ballots to states that refuse to release detailed voter lists to the Trump administration. According to Reuters, U.S. Postmaster General David Steiner confirmed the proposal at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing last week. The proposal would require states to release to the Postal Service the names and barcodes tied to their mail-in ballots for federal elections, according to Reuters. It would also require states to provide unique barcodes on the outbound and return ballot envelopes.
