This Saturday, we continue our celebration of powerful storytelling with Lackawanna Blues (2005), a rich, heartfelt film that brings to life the warmth, struggles, and beauty of a close-knit Black community.
📽️ Feature Presentation: Lackawanna Blues (2005)
Based on the critically acclaimed one-man play by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Lackawanna Blues tells the story of a young boy growing up in 1950s Lackawanna, New York, surrounded by a vibrant cast of unforgettable characters. At the heart of the community stands Miss Rachel “Nanny” Crosby (portrayed by S. Epatha Merkerson), a fierce, loving woman who becomes a mother to many, opening her home and heart to those in need.
Through the eyes of young Ruben, we see the joy, the pain, and the everyday magic of life among people who, despite their struggles, create a family defined not by blood but by love and survival. It’s a moving portrait of Black life that radiates dignity, humor, and heart.
