Documentary filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer talks about his astonishing new film, “The Act of Killing” in this SundanceNOW exclusive interview. Oppenheimer talks about the relationships he developed with his subjects – men responsible for hundreds of deaths during Indonesian civil war – and how those relationships led to collaborating on re-enactments that serve as both instances of self-promotion and confession. Recorded at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival. Interview by Eric Hynes. Video by Matthew Nayman. Edited by Ben Garchar.

This film is important. It highlights the impunity that persists in Indonesia for these and later crimes committed by Indonesia;s armed forces. Groups are urging for the Indonesian government to acknowledge the truth about the 1965 crimes and to apologize and provide reparations to the victims and their families. See @etan009 or etan. org
I like how it’s been edited when he mentions themes of simulation. I’d like to think that was intentional.
