Josh Wink shares the story behind his genre-defining classic, ‘Higher State Of Consciousness’.

Released in 1995 via Strictly Rhythm, this acid-dipped breakbeat techno scorcher from Philadelphia rave pioneer Josh Wink made a splash across the Atlantic in the UK, peaking at No. 8 in the charts.

After an original mix appeared on a compilation in 1994, the ‘Tweekin’ Acid Funk Mix’ we know and love unexpectedly took off the following year after being released as a single.

A hit in both the underground rave scene and in clubs across the globe, Wink recalls producing ‘Higher State Of Consciousness’ in his bedroom studio, using two TB-303s he purchased for $75 each. Remembering how the track was originally rejected by the label, Wink reflects on how its ultimate release changed his life forever, and how, 30 years later, it’s as beloved a dancefloor slammer as it’s ever been.

Electronic music history is rich with unforgettable and timeless classics. In our series, DJ Mag explores the tales behind some of the world’s favourite dance tracks, told by the people that made them.

I swear, the original song title was “Higher States of Consciousness”, not “state”. There’s a mandela effect that happened, at least in my reality! I just wrote this before hearing him say now that the title does have “states” in it instead of “state” but the title really changed..
