As the calendar turns each January, millions of people set New Year’s resolutions centered on losing weight and getting into better physical shape. For many older adults, however, those goals can feel unrealistic, or even out of reach. What should someone in their 60s or beyond reasonably expect?
That question is exactly what prompted John Jay Wiley to begin sharing his experience.
“This isn’t about flashy videos or selling a program,” Wiley says. “It’s just me, being honest about what worked and why.”
Now 67 years old, Wiley has lost 63 pounds in a single year through a combination of diet changes, moderate exercise, and personal accountability. His approach is intentionally simple—and refreshingly transparent.
No Gimmicks, No Sales Pitch
Wiley is quick to clarify what his story is not.
“There are no secret tips, nothing for sale, and absolutely nothing to buy,” he explains. “The purpose is to hold myself accountable and to share what’s actually working for me.”
For anyone who believes age is a built-in disadvantage, Wiley offers a straightforward challenge:
“If I can do it at 67, you can too.”
Where It All Started
On January 2, 2025, Wiley stepped on the scale and saw a number that forced him to confront reality.
“I weighed just under 261 pounds,” he recalls. “My eating had gone totally off the rails. I like to joke that I wasn’t just off track, I was a full train derailment.”
Over the years, he had tried nearly every mainstream approach: intermittent fasting, pescatarian diets, calorie counting, group weigh-ins, and counseling. None of them stuck.
“The problem wasn’t the programs,” Wiley says. “It was that I couldn’t maintain them long term.”
The Diet That Finally Worked
The only method that had ever produced consistent results for Wiley in the past was a strict keto diet. This time, he decided to take things a step further.
“I knew I needed to be more drastic,” he says. “That’s when I started with a carnivore diet.”
For the first three months, Wiley followed a total carnivore approach, later transitioning into a blend of carnivore and keto eating. Over time, he gradually reintroduced vegetables while still keeping carbohydrates low.
Here’s how his year broke down:
Months 1–3: 100% carnivore, with one cheat evening every six weeks
Months 3–6: 80% carnivore / 20% keto, cheat evening every six weeks
Months 6–9: 70% carnivore / 30% keto, cheat evening every six weeks
Months 9–Present: 60% carnivore / 40% keto, cheat evening every six weeks
“There was no perfection,” Wiley notes. “But there was consistency.”
Exercise That Fits Real Life
Rather than intense workouts or complicated routines, Wiley kept his exercise simple: walking.
“I just walked my dog,” he says.
Those walks were broken into five sessions per day. The first and last walks became the longest, with Wiley gradually increasing both distance and pace. Today, each long walk is about 2.2 miles, totaling 4.4 miles. Including the shorter walks, his daily total is roughly 5.6 miles.
Just as important as the physical movement was the mental reset.
“I started unplugging from all devices during the long walks,” Wiley explains. “No phone, no distractions, just walking, prayer, meditation and thinking.”
Strength Training, Slowly
A few months ago, Wiley added strength and weight training by joining a gym. He plans to share more about that experience in future updates but emphasizes that muscle-building was never the primary goal.
“I’m not trying to be a bodybuilder or get back to my 30-year-old self,” he says. “I just want to be healthier and enjoy my older years more.”
A Message for Anyone Who Thinks It’s Too Late
Wiley’s journey isn’t about extremes, aesthetics, or unrealistic expectations. It’s about sustainable change, accountability, and redefining what’s possible later in life.
“This was about getting my health back,” he says. “Nothing more, and nothing less.”
And for anyone standing at the start of a new year, wondering if change is still possible, Wiley’s story offers a simple reminder: progress doesn’t require perfection, just commitment and consistency.
