Hurricane hunters voyage inside Hurricane Polo’s eye

I got to fly on a science mission to explore eastern Pacific hurricane formation back in the early 90’s. In fact, it was Miss Piggy. I only got to fly into a tropical storm, but that was enough for me. Plus, the missions are typically really long, and when in and near a storm, you have to stay strapped in with a five-point harness. There were handrails along the top of the cabin to grab onto. The crew pointed out a big dent and bend where some equipment broke loose when they penetrated Hugo’s eyewall a few years before. The plane became partially inverted!
