You should always use thinset under your backer board.
Idiot ,what not to do
I went through 4 yr apprentiship, became a tile contractor. I can tell you that you do not LAY tile… it is set in a mortar bed, whether, thin set or mortar. You lay carpet or lino. In 1970s when I learned, one old tile journeyman used to space tile with string, soak in tub first, and use grout to SET tile. As an app. I CARRIED EVERYTHING, SOAKED TILE, CLEANED TOOLS, AND MIXED MUD AND GROUT. Hard labor, but rewarding. Today’s tile work is glue and stick junk. Used to lower floors between joists, vee top of joists, dry pack within tile thickness of hall floor so no step when finished. Roughed in and floated floors walls and ceilings. No shortcuts. Beverly Hills, Bellaire, all over L A county. And yes, I worked at Wilshire Tile 5862 Third St LA CA. In my experience, tile floors can be good flooring for mudrooms or high traffic areas. We usually don’t go for tile right away in our rentals. We’re looking to balance utility and cost efficiency. Much of the time we go for a Vinyl laminate flooring. It’s durable, easy to install and generally cost effective. After 16 years of investing in real estate, we’ve found that upgrading the flooring can be worth the investment in the long run.
You should always thinset then screw/nail your board down
