DJ Kool Herc launched the foundational era of hip hop in August 1973 when he hosted his famous back-to-school jam in the Bronx and pioneered the use of the breakbeat. Grandmaster Flash came slightly after as part of the next wave. He looked up to Kool Herc as a hero and began DJing a couple of years later (around 1975), taking Herc’s foundational ideas and drastically evolving them through technical innovations like the backspin, cutting, and clock theory. While Herc laid the blueprint, Flash built upon those mechanics to take turntablism to the next level.
