Buzzfeed Video was known as factory for online stars. The Try Guys, Watcher, Safiya Nygaard, and Quinta Brunson are just a few of the media power houses to act as Buzzfeed alumni. But behind the relatable videos and online quizzes, Buzzfeed Video was ensuring its own demise by turning their very talent against them. And even with their recent relaunch, they may not have learned from their mistakes.
This video is an analytical retrospective on the Buzzfeed Video Network of channels, including their latest relaunch.

Quick disclaimer (since apparently we do those in the description). The analytical components of these videos are largely based on my opinions drawn from personal observation, even if not constantly stated. Whereas biographical information will always strive to be objective and distinguish fact from commentary or jokes. Any relevant citations are also made visually (since honestly, I’m not the type to keep track as I go. I also write most of my shooting drafts from memory, and then get the citations/make corrections in the edit. Don’t ask, it’s that or it takes 5x longer).
And most importantly: it’s “Cradles”, by Sub Urban.

I know you guys are all just ad whores taking whatever money you can get, but did no one stop to ask what exactly a “symbolic” donation to Proton Mail is? That’s not a thing. A donation is a donation. Calling it symbolic is the kind of shit language people use to try to confuse consumers. Considering the kind of content you make, I’d have expected you to use more precise language.
Wait a minute… Ze frank?? As in the funny voice guy FOUNDED BuzzFeed?!
7:02 I really want to break this narrative that you can’t make a living on moral values and you have to hustle people to make money. There are tons of companies that have strong values and focus on creating more and giving more value than they take. YouTube is a great example of this. You don’t have to pay to reach a global audience as a creator. You could literally go from an iPhone camera to becoming a global superstar – ISHOWSPEED for example. There are lots of businesses that don’t exploit their consumers, vendors, and employees to make money. If we keep repeating this false narrative we just continue to repeat the same mistakes.
This is an excellent case study and its lessons apply beyond Buzz Feed to companies across nearly every industry. The primacy of shareholder value above all else and the executive compensation incentive structure that reinforce it is destroy many companies and potential companies than any else in society IMHO

I think a good chunk of what went wrong with BuzzFeed comes down to them forgetting a crucial rule of running a business: A happy worker is an effective worker. An unhappy worker either becomes a crappy worker or leaves.
As millennials Buzzfeed is epitome of our generation failure
