Here are a few important points about barracuda consumption in Ghana and West Africa:
โCommonly Traded and Eaten: Barracuda (often called Eduei in Fante) is sold in large quantities alongside other catches like mackerel, tuna, and anchovy. It is prepared in various ways, including fried and used in soups and stews.
โSafety in West Africa: The primary concern with barracuda is Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP), which is strongly associated with coral reef environments (like the Caribbean and some Pacific areas). The coast of West Africa, including Ghana, generally lacks the extensive coral reefs where the ciguatoxin-producing algae thrive.
โLower Ciguatera Risk: Because of the different marine environment, the species of barracuda caught (often Guinean Barracuda) and the lack of the specific toxin source generally means the ciguatera risk is significantly lower or non-existent for fish caught locally in Ghana.
โPreparation: As with most fish in Ghana, barracuda is often eaten smoked, dried, or freshly fried/grilled and served with popular staples like Banku or Kenkey and a spicy sauce like Shito.
