Halloween is days away and trick or treat is about to cost you considerably more than it used to. Candy prices have risen 8 percent over just the past year alone, and when you zoom out to 2020, the increase is a staggering 78 percent. The numbers at the shelf are hard to ignore. A standard 100-piece bag of Halloween candy now runs nearly $17. A bag of 55 Reese’s Pieces will set you back $29. Chocolate varieties have been hit the hardest, with prices up between 11 and 12 percent depending on the brand and product. Here is where the story gets particularly frustrating for consumers. Wholesale cocoa prices, the primary ingredient driving chocolate costs, actually fell by 70 percent this year. Ingredient costs went down significantly. Shelf prices went up anyway. Economists looking at the gap between those two numbers say the difference is not going back to consumers in any form. It is going directly into corporate profit margins. The ingredients got cheaper. The candy got more expensive. Someone is very clearly pocketing the difference. If you are trying to manage your Halloween budget this year, there are a few practical ways to stretch your dollar. Buying in bulk at warehouse stores like Costco or Sam’s Club typically offers significantly better value than grocery or convenience store pricing. Checking the price per ounce rather than the total bag price helps you make real comparisons between options. And choosing mixed candy assortments over all-chocolate bags can meaningfully reduce your total spend without noticeably impacting the trick or treaters at your door. Despite all of this, Americans are still expected to spend a combined $4.1 billion on Halloween candy this year.
