On Thursday August 27th, Rockstar Games released a 26-minute extended preview of the game exclusively on Netflix first, in a move that analysts immediately described as unprecedented for a video game release. The reaction was instantaneous and overwhelming. Netflix experienced bandwidth errors and crashes within minutes of the preview going live. Twitch crashed simultaneously as millions of viewers tried to stream their reactions in real time. And in the 24 hours that followed, YouTube racked up more than 10 million views of the preview and related content. GTA 6 does not even launch until November 19th, and yet the demand signals are already at a level most entertainment products never come close to reaching. Analytics firm Newzoo is projecting the game could generate $4.5 billion in cumulative sales within its first launch week alone, which would potentially make it the single most profitable entertainment product in human history. To put that in perspective, GTA 5, released 13 years ago, is still consistently finishing in the top five bestselling games every single year. The Washington Post has described GTA 6 as about to be the biggest pop media event of the year, if not the decade.
