In this clip from People’s Party, host Talib Kweli and co-host Jasmin Leigh talk with House of Pain frontman Everlast about his mega-hit “Jump Around.” Everlast shares the backstory of the song — including the fact that Ice Cube passed on the beat. He also addresses the source of what just might be the world’s most controversial sample. When Kweli remarks on the fact that the track launched around the same time as Kriss Kross’s “Jump,” Everlast tells the story of rushing their song onto the radio after learning that Joe Nicolo, co-founder of Ruffhouse Records, had heard the track and created a similar beat and theme for Kriss Kross.

I should be said that House of Pain and Criss Cross pulled off too amazingly go JUMP Records. So good in fact, that I think it would be criminal to even try to say which one was better. Very few hip-hop records have landed with the impact that these two records had.

That might have been one of the best sit downs I’ve heard 🍻 House of Pain was part of my High School memories…then Everlast became my early adulthood memories! 👊 I love watching him be able to show how talented he truly is. Like he said started as teenager and as he grew up his stories evolved.
