Bill Rasmussen, 93, died from Parkinson’s at his Florida home. He and his son Scott conceived ESPN in 1978 while stuck in traffic. The network launched Sept. 7, 1979, in 1.4 million homes. ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro called him a “visionary.” Rasmussen stepped away a year later after Getty Oil bought 85%. He is remembered as “our George Washington.”
