The White Guardian warns the Doctor of a terrible peril and directs the TARDIS to an Edwardian racing yacht. The Doctor is astonished to discover that the vessel is actually a space yacht competing in a race around the Solar System. Its captain, Straker, and his officers are Eternals – immortal beings with little imagination – driving the ship in pursuit of the ultimate prize: Enlightenment. But another competitor, the Buccaneer Captain Wrack, serves the Black Guardian, and she must be stopped from winning the race at all costs.

the best classic who story if not the best doctor who story ever made
“And really bad eggs….” ☠🎶
Nothing wrong with the episode. It’s just my nitpicking. No chess player says “check” when their movie places opponent king in check. It’s such a bad tv chess trope.
“Enlightenment” makes for a great conclusion to Turlough’s arc resisting the Black Guardian, but it’s easy to miss that Tegan gets to show off her character development in this story through her interactions with Marriner.
Normally in this kind of setup, you’d expect a kind of star-crossed romance between a human woman and a transcendent being who’s experiencing emotion and vulnerability for the first time. But in every single interaction, Tegan visibly despises him, constantly giving him a death glare that rivals Wrack’s ship-destroying laser. It might seem like she’s just being cold…until you remember that Marriner isn’t the first godlike being to intrude in her mind.
Between the introduction of the Mara in “Kinda” and its return in “Snakedance,” the experience of having her mind violated has been the biggest point of trauma for Tegan. So it makes perfect sense that she would be utterly repulsed by an Eternal being who seems to think that trespassing in her mind should be charming. It’s not unlikely that the trick she used to shut him out of her mind was a direct result of her never wanting to face that nightmare again.
So in the end, while our Eternal expects to be one half of a Manic Pixie Dream Romance, Tegan has zero tolerance for someone who clearly doesn’t even consider her existence as important beside what he can leech off of her. It’s immensely satisfying that even in his last moment before dissipating, she doesn’t betray a shred of sympathy for his selfish manipulation.
All around, it’s a wonderfully subtle way to show her growth and experience as a character, and Janet Fielding is impeccable at getting that across with every look and every word. I get the impression that if an Edward Cullen or a Christian Grey tried to woo her, they’d end up with a stake through their heart or chucked off a skyscraper, or else just dumped out into the vacuum of space.
