The Doctor and Mel arrive at the deep space trading post Ice World, where they are reunited with Sabalom Glitz. Mel also befriends a rebellious waitress called Ace, and together they begin the search for a mythical Dragon… Can they find it before the conceited and cold-hearted Kane does?

I think that’s the worst departure writing I’ve ever seen for an original Doctor Who companion. The show must have been really peeved with the actress.
Cartmel wanted rid of her to take the show away from the comedy it had become in this season.

I’ll say, after going through the last few doctor eras where all the companion exits were rushed through, tragic, or manufactured in the editing room, it’s a breath of fresh air that the Doctor and Mel part on wholesome terms with a hug and a bright outlook for the future.
