The interesting history about this film is that it was playing in NYC just down the street in August 1926 when The Son of the Sheik was premiering. Don Juan was a toe into recorded synchronized SOUND! Of course, Valentino would die in NYC on August 23…his planned next film was going to be “Cellini” and no sound was planned. Barrymore went on to be a star in sound films, Valentino never had the chance to even try…Co-start Estelle Taylor was married to Jack Dempsey and was supposed to be Valentino’s leading lady in “Cellini.” There are picture of Dempsey, Taylor and Valentino at the breakfast table only a few days before he was struck down and taken to the hospital…Myrna Loy had been dancing and was actually tested for a Valentino film, and later would be in his wife’s “What Price Beauty” which Valentino funded as Rambova was forbidden to interfere with Valentino’s films at that point ….she ditched him just as he was nearing completion of “The Eagle” which she had disapproved of….and couldn’t go near. Luckly, she didn’t because it was Valentino’s comeback film and while it wasn’t as big a hit as he earlier films, it did bring him back and set the stage for his much-needed next hit “The Son of the Sheik” …He needed the money so he went back to the role…
John Barrymore was a stage actor with a nice English voice while Rudolf Valentino was a famous dancer and he had a very thick Italian accent.
@bookmouse2719 Some people thought he had a “slight” accent but judging from the two recordings, he sounded a lot like my grandfather who after 70 years in the US always had the ending vowels and a pronounced accent! He may have been OK in ” man about town'” roles but he didn’t plan to act 5 more years according to what was said before he died…but sound would have cut that plan off plus the style of films was already changing…
Wow who knew when I heard Valentino’s sound recording singing pretty unreal cuz I thought that his voice was pretty much lost but to do a recording in 1923 and did it for his wife but was never publicly put out until his death but to hear it is pretty amazing
