This category would have been more competitive if it had been focused on two channel mixers because the panel so clearly didn’t like any mixer’s of that type and chose a 4 channel club style mixer instead. The judges immediately gravitate to the only mixer that had four channels rather than two and don’t really have to make fine distinctions. Hopefully, if there is a 2018 DJ tech awards, there will be both a two channel mixer under X amount category and a four channel mixer under x amount category.

I think that a competition for two channel mixers under $799 between Reloop’s new Kut, the Xone 23C, a Pioneer DJM 450/250/S3, the Mixars Duo and the Traktor Z2 would be a good competition.
Alternately, a competition under $1499 between Reloop’s 900 RMX, Mixar’s Quattor, the Pioneer DJM 750mkII and the Allen & Heath Xone PX5 would also be an interesting competition.

Personally I find the ‘ultimate club mixer’ category less compelling because alternatives to the DJM 900 Nexus2 are really more for touring than for clubs (Xone 96, 92 and Model 1 are definitely not standard equipment on the West Coast so they are only used if the artist is big enough to tour). Pioneer itself acknowledges the real competition is for ‘touring’ mixers at festivals due to their total dominance of clubs.
