Executives from United, American, and Southwest Airlines have all confirmed that they are actively cutting their cheapest and least profitable routes from their schedules. The reason is straightforward and directly connected to the ongoing US-Iran war — jet fuel prices are surging as the conflict continues to disrupt oil production and transport through the Strait of Hormuz, making certain routes simply too expensive to operate at prices travelers are willing or able to pay. The numbers behind this shift are stark. The Consumer Price Index already shows a 25 percent year-over-year jump in domestic airfares. The average transcontinental flight from New York to Los Angeles has more than doubled in the past twelve months alone, going from $167 to $414. Some individual airports have seen ticket prices jump by as much as 124 percent year over year. And now, rather than absorb those fuel costs or raise prices further on already strained consumers, airlines are taking a third path — eliminating the routes that generate the least revenue. Aviation experts are describing the situation as a perfect storm. Fuel costs push fares up while economic pressure on everyday consumers pushes demand down.
