This story is a huge running joke in my family as ‘the Brideshead one’. For that and the hilarious commentary, I have a soft spot even if I think it’s crap.
Not only hasn’t been a pure historical (no aliens apart from the TARDIS crew) since this, they hadn’t been one for about 16 years before it (The Highlanders when Jamie was recruited)
This borrows heavily from The Shout starring Alan Bates, John Hurt & Tim Curry & The Ghoul, also starring John Hurt.
In some Amazonian tribes, young men wear lip plates to show they’re now adults. The Kayapo tribe in Brazil wears them, so the character in Black Orchid is pretty accurate (definitely for DW standards).
My main memory is finding this story a little dull when I first saw it as a child (the cricket scenes lasted far too long), but appreciating the costumes and setting as an adult.
The funniest part was when the gathering heard someone was found murdered, and rushed to see the body. Upon identifying the victim, the grand dame of the house declares, “Thank goodness, just one of the servants!”
That line really lets one know this is a British TV show!
I come for the fun Doctor Who reviews. I stay for the rats. Both always make my day better.
It wa a good one.
During the Fifth Doctor’s time the production crew were trying to get away from the 4-episode, 4-episode, 4-episode, 4-episode, 4-episode, 6-episode season format, (see the Key to Time series, or nearly any other Tom Baker season). Instead they made all of the fifth doctors’ seasons’ stories 4-episodes max, and then they took the otherwise extra episodes in the schedule and made little 2-parters (like _Edge of Destruction)._ They were, in order: _Black Orchid, The King’s Demons,_ and _The Awakening_ With the exception of _the King’s Demons_ (and the introduction of Chameleon — whatever), I remember liking the other two.
I for one would love to see more pure historicals. _The Awakening_ is kinda funny in that it is sort of a meta-historical as while there is an alien threat, the story itself revolves around a rural community’s romanticized historical re-enactment, and there is even some time travel involved.
