An asteroid just flew closer to Earth than the Space Station, NASA may have spotted the first galaxy ever formed, and SpaceX could lose its Moon mission contract. These recent days in space were absolutely insane. Here’s everything you missed.

I think we should be able to get a sizable population out of Earth as soon as possible.
Why? Sooner or later we’ll get an asteroid (or a herd of them) that will overwhelm our planetary defenses.
The same goes for space versus climate change. The current passive, anti-industrial approaches to remediating climate change will be useless against a mega volcano that would undo in months years of passive climate remediation.
Let the tree huggers debate while I board a spaceship, and let’s see who will have the last words in thr debate about climate change. It will be those already in space, who then can come down and fix that issue.

You’ve nailed the core existential rationale for becoming a multiplanetary species. It’s the ultimate backup plan for humanity, not an escape from Earth’s problems, but an insurance policy against the ones we can’t control. The key is that this isn’t an either/or choice. The same sustainable technologies and closed-loop systems we develop for Mars energy, water, food are the very same ones we need to become better stewards of Earth. The goal isn’t to abandon one planet, but to make the entire species more resilient by having more than one home.
Building the spaceship is the first step to being able to come down and fix anything. Action beats debate every time. Do you think the primary driver for public support will be the inspirational vision, or the cold, hard logic of survival?

So basicallywhat you’re saying is someone, somewhere, dropped the ball when they didn’t notice a asteroid pass so closely to planet earth, eh?

This is Apophis. Destined to come close to earth in 2029. It’s a trumpet plague from the chapter of Revelations chapter 17
