Egypt was better than Argentina, but were they in the last 15 minutes? Didn’t seem like it, quite the other way around. The rulebook says that Salah’s fall at the box was not a penalty (contact after losing the ball, perfect steal), therefore, could it have been a 3-3 tie into extra time if the second goal hadn’t been disallowed? The rulebook calls for VAR intervention to rewind to the start of the attacking phase to see if the origin was the result of a foul, and indeed it was a step on the foot (illegal steal), and also calls for the whole play to be disallowed (starts with a foul), so there’s not much to say. It was the right call. On top of that the Egyptian coach made poor substitutions at the end—one of the strikers went out—so did he really go out to get another goal, or was he just confident about keeping the 2-0 or 2-1 until the end? Argentina made his strategy backfire, yet he complains about a conspiracy. This is a 90+ minutes sport, not 80.
It doesn’t matter if they were up 2-0 still. If that goal wasn’t chalked off who knows if Egypt could’ve gone up 3-0 after. Dan is not seeing it that way. Yes they scored after but that doesn’t take way from the fact that the goal should’ve stood especially if they didn’t check the foul before Argentina 3rd goal.
