Anthropic, the company behind the AI chatbot Claude, has started embedding invisible watermarks into every single piece of text generated by Claude, globally, as of August 2nd. The watermark is completely invisible to the naked eye, does not alter the text in any way, but crucially it travels with the content even after you copy and paste it somewhere else. The practical implications of this are significant. If a student submits an essay written by Claude, the watermark goes with it. If a journalist publishes a story written by Claude, same deal. If someone posts a fake review or a fraudulent document generated by Claude, the embedded signal is right there with it. This marks the first time a major AI laboratory has deployed production-scale text watermarking globally, covering every single platform where Claude is available. OpenAI has not taken this step yet. There is one obvious limitation worth noting — the detection tool capable of actually reading the watermarks is still being built. Anthropic was also careful to clarify that a watermark only indicates text was processed by Claude, not necessarily that Claude wrote it entirely, since many people use Claude to proofread, translate, or edit their own human-written content. But the direction this is heading is clear — AI-generated content is going to become significantly harder to pass off as entirely human.
