I know nothing about this stuff but as soon as i heard about the hugging face incident i thought it was pretty obvious that the agents had a task to complete, and would use whatever means were at their disposal to complete that task. Without some kind of guardrails they would of course use “illegal” means to achieve an outcome.
If we don’t want things like this happening, then we need to look at the creators of these models, because thats where the AI’s “learning” originates.
It might sound like i am anthropomorphising, but in all honesty, it seems to me that AI needs responsible “parents” if we don’t want things like this to happen. If the AI’s “parents” are going to neglect their responsibilities we will end up with delinquent AI. If Altman wants to beg governments to regulate AI – go for it. Impose hefty fines on those who are responsible and neglect their offspring. And i mean hefty fines in the tens of billions due to potential scale of damage . Maybe thats not the regulation Sam Altman had in mind, but i bet it would make him and others like him smarten up and take responsibility.
Responsibility may have to be enforced from governments (unfortunately) if this continues. I did see Anthropic, Google and OpenAI agree to set’AI safety standards’ two days ago, but let’s see what actually comes of it
β@TUNEDINTOTECH that sounds good in theory, but self regulation of industry hasn’t worked in other areas, and I can’t help thinking why haven’t they already been progressively evaluating risk as they go along? Its not like there haven’t been warnings by experts in the field for well over a decade, and if they understand their own technologies incidents like this should be no surprise. On government regulation i have doubts on whether it would be strong enough. Most governments seem to cave to lobbyists and the interests of wealthy corporate donors. Expert independent testimony input is important in drafting legislation, but often (in other cases) this seems to be provided by experts aligned with vested interests, or lobby groups that promote an agenda that isn’t evidence based. Still, something is needed, and incidents like these hackings mught hurry that along.

Not only do we need to held these companies responsible and issue them with huge fines but we should also be sending the higher up people to jail for these incidents. This would force some responsibility and encourage fail-safe approaches to the industry.
If a human hacked a foreign government the outcome would be different wouldn’t it

So, we have the capability to bomb countries “into the Stone Age” (as our Trump regime says) by depriving them of fuel, but no one knows how to deprive data centers of fuel? I’m guessing that would also put us back into the Stone Age, if the same data centers also control our internet and utilities.
This begs the question: does no one really know what controls what in a data center? Surely they are not indestructible. I guess we’ll find out, if people become angered enough to take them down the way they’re removing the Flock surveillance cameras around our country.
If we don’t control Ai, it will become the enemy, and data centers are not indestructible when it comes to fire, floods, and removal of fuel sources for their cooling systems and operation.
