Seven in ten American teenagers are now using artificial intelligence to do their schoolwork. Not to assist their learning. Not as a study aid. To do it for them entirely. A new survey of over 1,000 US teenagers conducted by Common Sense Media found that 70 percent of teens are using AI for school assignments, and 63 percent of those students admit to taking the AI’s answer directly and submitting it without working through the problem themselves at any point. The impact on actual learning outcomes is becoming impossible to ignore. Reading scores fell in 83 percent of US school districts this year. Math scores fell in 70 percent of districts. These are not marginal declines — they represent a broad and accelerating collapse in measured academic achievement happening at the same time that AI tool usage among students is surging. Perhaps the most troubling detail in the entire survey is this one — only 27 percent of teenagers say a teacher has ever taught them how to use AI tools safely and responsibly. That means the vast majority of students are navigating one of the most powerful and potentially disruptive technologies ever created entirely without adult guidance or structured education about its appropriate use. And here is the deeper problem that goes beyond test scores. When students allow AI to think for them consistently over time, they stop developing the critical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving skills that no AI can replicate and that every employer ultimately needs from a human employee. The ability to reason through an unfamiliar problem, adapt to new information and make sound judgments is precisely what makes a human worker valuable. Those skills require practice to develop, and AI is quietly eliminating that practice at scale. So we want to know — do you think AI tools should be banned outright in schools?
