Meet Jinny Lu. She is a six year old rescue pug with bulging eyes, a tongue that simply will not stay inside her mouth, and a face that looks permanently and magnificently bewildered. At the 50th Annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, California, Jinny Lu was officially crowned the ugliest dog in the entire world. She won $5,000 and wore pearls for the occasion, because why not. But behind that gloriously chaotic little face is one of the most remarkable backstories in the contest’s history. Four years ago, Jinny Lu was rescued from the mountains of South Korea, where she faced the very real threat of the dog meat trade. Two California rescue organizations joined forces to give her a second chance at life. In the years since, she has never stopped paying it forward. Jinny Lu now visits elementary schools to teach children about the importance of pet adoption, and brings comfort and joy to hospice patients and people living in memory care facilities. She came agonizingly close last year, finishing in second place. But she came back, and this time she won it all. In four years of freedom, Jinny Lu has never stopped showing up.
