As soon as they said Frankenmuth, I knew it was Michigan, 45 minutes from me, in the Thumb of Michigan. It’s a beautiful German town, historical. 14 fudge shops, where you actually watch them making different kinds of fudge, Bronners it’s a huge store with everything Christmas and Father Christmas and Christian Historical emblems, plus Jewish items. Toy shop, Shoe cobbler, Restaurants, etc. All with German themes and Architecture. And a few minutes away a Plaza with name brand stores. Yes, grocery store, gas station. An actual German village.
What you said about “the truly German town” may well be correct. Unfortunately, however, Christmas in Germany has also become an increasingly commercial affair. In our supermarkets, you can often buy the first chocolate Santas and other typical Christmas pastries as early as October. And it feels like it starts a few days earlier every year. Yet there is a difference—specifically between big cities and small villages. In small villages, people tend to live in closer-knit communities—not necessarily in a physical sense, but rather in terms of a sense of solidarity. In smaller German towns and villages, for instance, people notice if someone they usually see regularly hasn’t been spotted for a day, and someone will check to see what’s wrong. In major German cities, by contrast, it happens all too often that people lie dead in their apartments for months, or are seriously ill or injured, without anyone noticing. It’s perverse: the more people there are in a city, the lonelier many of them feel. And then, of course, there are regional differences in the traditions of the local people. The people living in the Michigan town featured in the film have many German ancestors—they are essentially descendants of immigrants who came together, brought their traditions with them, and decided to keep them alive. Hehe—take the film’s director, Joel Paul Reisig, for example: “Paul” is a German first name, and “Reisig” is a German surname. 🙂 Donald Trump’s paternal grandfather came from a German town called Kallstadt, and the famous “Heinz Ketchup” is German, too—also originating from Kallstadt.
Holland, Michigan is on Michigans West Coast and is known as tulip town. Several family from Holland settled Holland, Michigan. The town is filled with Tulip fields, beautiful.

Really when they are in the two rooms all talking and ignoring poor Caroline just perfectly timed. Nice to see adults communicating and discussing. This is a lost art to many the past few decades. We need more movies like this. I saw an older comedy about a campground holiday multi-booking. I think it was called mad families director Fred Wolfe. Three ethnicities.
I love it when people thank the drivers and clerks etc. Too many times, in the movies that little courtesy and appreciation get overlooked. Karl gave the horse and carriage driver a little wave 🙂 I have watched a ridiculous number of movies old and new, all genres but this was the most relaxing, fun, wholesome and natural one. A wonderful job of inviting the audience into the family.
