Have you guys seen the remake of this movie? By Edward Berger it’s really an amazing watch the shots the graphics it’s insane
I watched it when it came out. There is so much sadness. And it just deepens. The book is excellent as well.
Definitely a great film John Boy carrying the mortally wounded Katz played by Borgnine was a great influence on keeping me from wanting to join the military and in particular the infantry

When my Dad came home from Vietnam he took off his dress uniform took it to the dry cleaners & never put it back on ! It was put on a hanger up in a closet upstairs in our house and once in a while he would let us see it sometimes on Memorial days . We were always so proud of him & told him all the time!
