🎬 BlackTree Media’s Saturday Movie Special – Celebrating Black History Month! 🎬
This Black History Month, we’re honoring the trailblazing Black actors who paved the way in Hollywood. This week, we feature Edge of the City (1957)—a powerful social drama starring the legendary Sidney Poitier and John Cassavetes in a gripping tale of friendship, racism, and justice.
In this groundbreaking film, Sidney Poitier stars as Tommy Tyler, a compassionate and self-assured dockworker who takes a troubled newcomer, Axel Nordmann (John Cassavetes), under his wing. As the two men form a deep friendship, they face racial tensions, corruption, and the cruelty of a racist foreman, played by Jack Warden. Directed by Martin Ritt, Edge of the City is a poignant and bold film that tackled racial issues in America years before the civil rights movement reached its peak. Poitier’s performance cemented his status as a trailblazer for Black actors in Hollywood, and the film remains an essential classic in American cinema.

Edge Of the City is a 1957 film derived from a television play “A Man Six Feet Tall” which also starred Sidney Poitier and Don Murray. The teleplay aired a year earlier. Actor Don Murray was replaced in the film by up-and-coming dramatic actor John Cassavetes, who would go direct the independent film “Shadows” in 1958. Shadows is today considered a critical acclaimed film and spawned, what is now known as the independent film movement. Cassavetes would go on not only acting but directing 11 more films over the span of 25 years to critical acclaim success until his untimely death in 1989.
