Mother Riley Meets the Vampire (1952) is a delightfully bizarre British horror-comedy from Fernwood Productions, starring Arthur Lucan, Bela Lugosi, and Dora Bryan. Directed by John Gilling, this offbeat cult curiosity mixes slapstick comedy, mad-scientist mayhem, and Gothic horror in a wonderfully eccentric slice of postwar British cinema.
HOW THIS FOR GENIUS: The mysterious figure known as ‘The Vampire’ comes to England to complete experiments in his mad bid to control the world. When the radar-controlled Robot he ordered is mistakenly delivered to Mother Riley, the Vampire uses radar control to have the Robot transport itself and Mother Riley to the proper destination. The old lady goes into a whirl of side-splitting action as she tries to frustrate the sinister vampire’s plans!

A Tasty Tidbit from Mystery Girl: Bela Lugosi, stranded in England after a failed Dracula stage tour, took the role for $5,000 to fund his return to America. This was the final film in the long-running Old Mother Riley series and the only one made after Arthur Lucan separated from his wife and stage partner, Kitty McShane.

Bela = the worst actor ever !!!
Bela Lugosi was a heroin addict at the end of his life. I think it was due to cancer.
Wrong. He had a serious leg injury from WW1. Doctors treated him with morphine for the extreme pain. Never took heroin. He escaped from fascism in Hungary and later became an American citizen. Bela voluntarily went in for treatment in the early 1950’s and left totally clean. Please don’t say things like this as if they’re true. Mr. Lugosi never got the respect he deserved but he kept on, always delivering mesmerizing performances.
