Their lip synching to the studio recording which is why your hearing the violins. This was a regular thing on music shows in the 60’s.

Umm, way off on autotune. It wasn’t invented until the late 90s, not the 70s. It began its process of ruining the music industry in 1998 with its blatant use in a Song by Cher. It is indefensible and makes any song sound like shit. Back in the 70s , if you wanted a good vocal sound, you had to be able to sing well, and if you wanted beautiful harmonies, you had to be able to sing harmonies. Autotune is the death of music. Period.
The Guess Who were MONSTER hit makers back in the day.
