The internet is facing one of its most serious coordinated security threats in recent memory, and it is happening right now. A critical vulnerability has been discovered in PHP, the foundational programming language that powers approximately 77 percent of all websites currently operating on the internet. To put that number in perspective, the overwhelming majority of the web you use every single day runs on PHP in some form. When a flaw this significant surfaces in a language this widely deployed, the consequences can be felt almost instantly and at global scale. That is exactly what happened today. Within hours of the vulnerability being made public, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince reported that hacking attempts targeting the flaw had surged from thousands of attempts to millions, an escalation that reflects just how quickly organized threat actors move when a new window of opportunity opens. The response from governments and institutions around the world was immediate. Government websites in Australia, the Netherlands and Germany were taken offline as a precautionary measure rather than risk exploitation. Banks, transport operators and major media outlets pulled their sites down while their technical teams raced to apply an emergency patch designed to close the vulnerability. The United States National Security Agency issued a direct and urgent order to system administrators across the country: patch your systems immediately or take them offline entirely until you can. The patch exists, and that is the critical distinction between this situation and a worst-case scenario. But the window between a vulnerability being announced and every affected system being fully patched is precisely when hackers move fastest and do the most damage.
