A major new analysis of medical records covering more than 140 million patients has delivered a stark warning about the growing danger of e-bikes, and the numbers are difficult to ignore. Emergency room visits related to e-bike injuries surged 760 percent between January 2023 and August 2026. That alone is an alarming figure. But for children and teenagers, the situation is considerably worse. Their rate of e-bike emergency room visits jumped 1,810 percent over the same period, a number that researchers describe as a clear and urgent signal that something needs to change. The injury profile for young riders is especially concerning. Nearly 8 percent of all e-bike ER cases involving patients under 18 included a traumatic brain injury, a rate that is significantly higher than what is seen with traditional bicycle accidents in the same age group. The reasons are not hard to identify. E-bikes are substantially heavier than conventional bicycles and capable of reaching speeds that catch young and inexperienced riders off guard. They are also becoming increasingly accessible to children and teenagers, many of whom are riding without helmets. The gap between how fast e-bike adoption is growing and how slowly safety regulations and parental awareness are responding is precisely where the danger lives, according to the researchers behind the analysis. They are calling for immediate action on both fronts — stronger regulatory frameworks around age limits and mandatory helmet use, and a serious increase in the attention parents are paying to how, where and at what speed their kids are riding. So we want to know — do you think e-bikes need stricter age limits, mandatory helmet laws, or both?
