🎶 Here are 20 music videos that were among the hottest and most heavily played during the year 1987 on MTV – 39 YEARS AGO!
This list comes directly from the official MTV year-end roundup episode they released at the end of ’87, where they listed what they chose as the Top Video Countdown of 1987. The full list can be found at: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls023409901/
This means that this is NOT our personal choices, favorites, or picks! MTV chose and ranked these videos, we didn’t. We’re just showing you their list and reminiscing about these classic videos and songs! 🙂
You’ll find great artists from WHITNEY HOUSTON to BILLY IDOL, WHITESNAKE to BON JOVI, PETER GABRIEL to STEVE WINWOOD and many more artists that were staples of Eighties rock & pop radio!
While this video features so many hits from that time period, needless to say there are still many other great ones that didn’t make the list here. Do you remember these songs? Which one is your favorite? Which videos from 1987 do you think should’ve been included in their top 20? Comment below!

PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING: Answering some questions here that I regularly get in the comments…
1. The Madonna song at number eight was blocked by her label. Sorry about that.
2. This is NOT a list of personal favorites or choices that we made. This list comes directly from MTV’s own year-end countdown episode that they aired back in late 1987. The videos and how they’re ranked was MTV’s own doing, not mine. You can find the full list of videos they featured in that episode here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls023409901/
3. Some of the songs featured came out the previous year (1986). This video is not saying all of these songs came out in 1987. MTV based their ranking on videos that were released between the later part of 1986 thru until the later part of 1987. This is similar to how BILLBOARD creates their year-end charts. As such, MTV’s chart will include songs that came out during the previous year, so leaving comments about how some songs are from 1986 like we made a mistake is pointless. This chart demonstrates the videos that MTV played the most and felt was the best during 1987, and they included them in their year-end countdown, not us.
4. This is not an AI channel, this video was created by actual GEN-X’ers who grew up loving this music and wanting to share our love and memories of these songs and videos with you! We know these lists are missing lots of great songs and we agree they’re far from perfect (again, we didn’t create these lists and choose the rankings). But we’d love to know what songs you remember the most? What other songs and videos from that era do you remember fondly? Did you see these videos when they were being played on MTV and other video shows back in the ’80s? Leave a comment and let us know!

When MTV actually played music.
Awesome times !!! Awesome television in those years !!
Genesis was one of my favorite bands back then.
#5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Six songs never heard about
I was in 8th and 9th grade in 1987, and my brother (two grades behind me) and I would sit by the radio with our loaded portable tape recorder, waiting for a good song to come on so one of us could press Play and Record as soon as the DJ finished talking (it was cutting-edge technology then). We loved listening to AT40 because Casey Kasem didn’t talk over the intro, just played the song. Our Sunday routine was church, prerecorded SNL from the night before (we learned how to program the VCR just for that purpose), and the last (top) 15 songs from Casey’s Coast to Coast! I loved most of the songs represented in the video countdown—though “Open Your Heart” had no sound until the final 3 seconds. When I was in 9th grade, the woman who lived across the street from our bus stop let us watch MTV before the bus came. Best 5 minutes of my school day!
White Snake was one my many favorites back in the day.
U2 is still the BEST!! ❤❤❤
I thought Dead or Alive was a year or 2 later.
