In an essay for HuffPost, guest writer Sharon Kwon shared what happened when she and her estranged parents finally talked again. “In family therapy, my parents and I traveled back in time to the very beginning … we confronted the cultural clashes, language barriers and miscommunication that widened the gap between us,“ wrote Kwon, who is Korean American. “I talked earnestly and openly about my values and beliefs for the first time ever. We talked about our boundaries and what it would take for us both to accept each other and what that kind of relationship could look like.”

My mom used to talked about how she knew we (my brother and I) would grow up and never speak to her again. When I was younger I didn’t understand why she thought that. As I got older I realized she knew what she was doing. She knew she was mistreating us and not allowing us to be separate people. Mind you she tried to manipulate us and abuse us so we wouldn’t leave but I finally did in 2020. I ultimately had to cut ties with my entire family because none of them had boundaries and refused to stop sharing information about me with my mother. So now no one in my family knows where I am and I’m happier for that.

So selfish. Avoids accountability like the plague. Drops responsibility and blames someone else. Destroys their child’s autonomy, shames them out of agency. Centers the parents worldview to the exclusion of the child. Gaslights the child into believing they’re crazy. I’ve heard it 1 million times and experienced it personally. Estranged parents are all the same. Arrested Development. Stunted because perhaps they were abused by their own parents, but they are maldeveloped.
