Hospitals are notorious for bad food. When patients eat poorly, it can increase the price of their stay by 30%, and malnourishment costs the US healthcare system billions each year. But offering good food isn’t easy. Many hospitals operate on negative margins. Some have a budget of as little as $4 per patient meal according to US Foods.

Now, one New York City medical network is changing the cliche thanks to an unexpected character: a Michelin-starred chef. We paid a visit to learn how Northwell Health went from getting one-star food reviews to serving up five-star dishes like seared scallops and lobster linguine.

NYU Langone Hospital Langone Kimmel Pavilion has excellent patient food. Northwell Health / Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC has God-awful patient food. Nursing care at Lenox Hill is also hit or miss. Terrible. The differences are like day and night.

He might be the only Michelin star chef working in a hospital but there have been professional chefs working in hospitals for years doing the exact same thing.
Not every hospital can afford a chef or scallops or lobster bc the food budget is not a priority, healthcare is the priority.
Trust me when I say every hospital director and chef wants to make good food for their patients. If a hospital has the budget for good food, every hospital would serve good food.
Unreal to think that someone would be using coffee pods and not an industrial size coffee maker for that number of clients. That director should have been fired the day they bought a pod machine.

This brings me hope. Now let’s do this in prisons, and watch the people CALM their nervous system as their nutritional needs are met.

I was once in a hospital in New Zealand in which patient food was comically bad and not much of it. The food provider was a major American based but international food company. The only explanation that I could come up with was that there was corruption in the system.

Healthcare should NEVER be about Profit or money at all and should be a Right funded by the government and or taxes like the UK ( yes the NHS in the uk has problems but it’s better then getting a bill like the US)
