More than half of that total — $21.7 billion — went directly to replacing missiles and munitions that have been expended in the conflict. And here is the detail that has national security experts most alarmed. The United States has burned through as much as two-thirds of its missile defense interceptors since the war began. Replenishing that stockpile could take a minimum of five years, leaving the country significantly and measurably less capable of defending against ballistic missile threats anywhere else in the world during that window. The economic ripple effects extend beyond the defense budget. The CBO also found the war is driving inflation higher, with personal consumption costs expected to rise by an additional half a percentage point through early 2027. And the $38.1 billion figure does not even include the cost of repairing US military facilities across the Middle East that have been damaged by Iranian strikes — a bill that experts say will run into billions more.
