Kat Curtis| Forbes just dropped its 45th annual Forbes 400, the definitive ranking of the wealthiest Americans, and the numbers are genuinely mind-bending from top to bottom. Let us start with what it takes just to get on the list. This year the minimum net worth required to make the Forbes 400 was $4.4 billion dollars — a full $600 million higher than last year’s cutoff. That means there are now 590 American billionaires who are simply not wealthy enough to be included. The 400 people who did make it hold a combined net worth of $8 trillion dollars, a figure that grew by $1.4 trillion in a single year. Here are your top five richest Americans right now. At number one, for the fifth consecutive year, is Elon Musk at $908 billion dollars. He briefly became the world’s first ever trillionaire back in June when SpaceX went public before his net worth pulled back slightly. His lead over the second-richest American is a staggering $530 billion dollars. Number two is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos at $378 billion. Number three is Google co-founder Larry Page at $278 billion. Number four is Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell at $263 billion, a massive gainer on the back of the AI investment boom. And number five is Google co-founder Sergey Brin at $256 billion. And for some perspective on just how stratospheric these numbers have become — Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Arnold Schwarzenegger are all confirmed billionaires who did not come close enough to make the cut. So we want to know — does this extraordinary level of wealth concentration concern you? Or do you think billionaires like these ultimately create more value for society than they capture for themselves?
