MOVIE SYNOPSIS

Young Calogero “C” Anello grows up in an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx during the 1960s.

His father, Lorenzo, is a hardworking bus driver who believes in honesty, responsibility, and earning a living the right way.

But Calogero becomes fascinated by Sonny, the charismatic local mob boss who commands fear and respect throughout the neighborhood.

After witnessing Sonny commit a murder and refusing to identify him to police, Calogero gains Sonny’s trust and begins spending more time around the neighborhood crew.

As he gets older, Calogero finds himself caught between two very different father figures—and two very different ideas about what it means to be a man.

FILM BACKGROUND

A Bronx Tale began as a one-man stage play written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, inspired by his childhood in the Bronx.

Robert De Niro saw the play, worked with Palminteri to adapt it for the screen, and made the film his directorial debut. Palminteri insisted on playing Sonny himself, a decision that became central to the film’s identity.

The story’s famous lesson—

“The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.”

—became one of the most memorable lines in 1990s cinema.
