Trauma is everywhere now. We talk about it online, with friends, on TikTok, in films, basically everywhere. And while that’s made it easier to talk about mental health, it’s also created (it seems) a new question: when does sharing become oversharing?
Why are we so suspicious of people who talk about their trauma? Why do some stories get believed while others get dismissed? And what happens when personal suffering becomes content?

Great video as always! I do think though that Arday wasn’t really relevant and it’s a bit of a stretch. It’s horrible the way the media hounded him and shows how much racism is still so rampant in the UK (especially in organisations like the Telegraph), but the Guardian did a very good piece where they found a lot of evidence that he fabricated much of his backstory, including the “trauma” you’re talking about. He did not deserve the way he was treated and a white professor would never have received the same response, but the lies do mean that he’s not exactly a strong reference here.
The thing is with fire escape woman is that so much of her personal experience is dressed up in psychiatric nomenclature to manipulate an audience.

Alice you clearly haven’t read anything about Jason Arday – he lied and cheated throughout his career. The plagarisations accusations are 100% true – he copied verbatim large chunks of someone else’s work, he was let of because of his disability, the severity of which have been challenged by people who knew him growing up. He wrote several papers that were written with fraudulent data. Quotes attributed to multiple people. The one paper he did write was autoethnography – which is basically writing about yourself, which is worst for epistemological evidence. He lied about degrees he got, where he worked and his athletic ability. More than a several times he has changed his story or stopped talking about things that were part of his lifestory – just because they were simply could not be true. For christ’s sake – even the Guardian, the Atlantic and the New York Times called him out on numerous stories. The only ‘news’ sources left support him are the radical left (and not all of them) and the kind liberal identitarian nonsense that should have been left back in COVID times. The guy will go down as one of the biggest liars next Bernie Madoff.
