My grandkids were at the store with me and there was a very small man who worked at the store. I had the kids in the grocery cart and I saw them notice him. They were pointing and laughing, my first instinct was to push the cart quickly away. I was horrified by their behavior. I realized they were not trying to be mean, this was their first experience with someone who was different. So i asked them why are you laughing at him, do you think that is a nice thing to do. They got quiet, and then said ” he is a grown up but he is little like us. I used it as an opportunity to tell them how some people are born differently. Sometimes people do not grow like everyone else, some people grow way bigger or smaller but they are still people with feelings who do not like to be laughed at and how it might hurt their feelings. Then they started sharing. The middle child told me about a girl in her class who couldn’t hear but that she was her friend, I asked what she would feel if someone laughed at her friend for not being able to hear and talking differently and she said “I would be mad because she is my friend and it’s not nice. We discussed it and they realized that they had not acted in a kind way. I believed they learned from the experience

I was on the church van one time and a newcomer asked me, “What do you want to be called, handicapped, or disabled?” I said, “Sister Rose.” The driver looked at me and smiled. 😊
