My mother was from Brandon. Her family was one of the original families in Rankin County. They were part of a wagon train party headed to Texas from Orangeburg SC. They got as far as Rankin and decided to stay there after a child in the party died there when they stopped for the night. I loved visiting my grandmother there during the summers. During the depression, my grandmother asked to use the then empty jail for a recreation center for children. She taught sports and arts and crafts there. I also remember going into the store as a child and seeing a tapestry purse that matched a skirt my mother had and my grandmother bought it for me to bring to her. I am wondering how many times our family name is in that register.

The home came out beautiful but I wouldn’t want to live downtown with all of that traffic and noise. I guess some people like that.
