Read the book “Until The Twelfth of Never”. I read it when it came out. It tells a much bigger picture to this. Dan was making 140,000 a month when he left. Offering her 9,000 a month at first was an insult. When it increased to 16,000 he decided to deduct money from her if she swore at him. It’s like, grow up. She had a right to be mad at this guy and his ho until she wasn’t anymore. Betty had dresses alone worth 10,000 each during the marriage. This is California high society money, not our kind of “everywhere else America” money. Even for the 80’s. Have you ever been to California? It’s about 5x as expensive as any other place except maybe New York. My daughter went to college there outside LA. A cramped lower grade to average two bedroom apartment she had to share with three other people costed over 4,000 a month with utilities you have to pay for. My share was over 1,000 for her. A bottle of water there costs an insane amount. That’s just outside Los Angeles. If you go to La Jolla you are going to spend even more than that to live there. Dan was indeed having an affair with Linda since at least 1983 but he knew Linda before she came to his office to work with him. He did have an affair with Linda for at least two years and kept denying it before he left. The Meredith Baxter movies were great acting but inaccurate in time lines and events. Like the Christmas scene in the movie where Betty throws a ring at him he gave her. In reality, the affair was well under way, he kept denying it but she still kept suspecting. So she puts it aside and asks for this really nice ring for Christmas and tells him which one she likes. He gets her this really downgraded version. In the movie you just see Meredith Baxter throw it and call it a piece of crap and not what she asked for. In reality, Betty knew the reason behind this. It was a nice ring but not the kind you show off and he didn’t want Betty to show up at his office and flash a nicer ring in Linda’s face, because let’s face it that would be the first thing many women would do to let the office thing know he’s still very married. While he’s still kind of dragging her along in the separation making her believe he would return, she would find out Linda’s been at his house around the kids, making that cake. That’s a true story also. He also used “Epstein Credits” during the divorce which is legal in California. Meaning any debt they accrued during the marriage and divorce that he was still paying on, he will make her pay back to him. Also his student loans for law school. Linda would send Betty face cream and weight loss ads in the mail, society clippings of her and Dan out together with the writing at the bottom “eat your heart out b**ch”, she refused to give Betty’s wedding china back to her. The children said when Betty left a nasty message on voice mail, she would get really excited to tell Dan so he could deduct money from Betty for using swear words. After Dan married Linda, she went out to Neiman Marcus and bought the exact same blue and cream stationery Betty always used with the same heading of “Mrs Daniel Broderick III” at the top. Betty’s actions were not right, but she was definitely gaslighted and also taunted by the office girl Linda. I believe Betty here. With the facts I have read outside the testimonies, she’s very truthful here and no, not even 16,000 a month in La Jolla in the 1980’s is a lot of money.
