When Jimmy Buffett was diagnosed with skin cancer four years ago, the devastating news was something of a double whammy for his family.
As the singer-songwriter, who died on Sept. 1 at age 76, dealt with a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer called Merkel cell carcinoma, Laurie Buffett McGuane, his younger sister, was told she also had cancer.

I once overheard an oncologist tell someone that a diagnoses for any type of cancer will never be “cancer free”, although a person can remain in remission for life.
It is not true that every cancer patient can never be cancer-free. If a skin cancer patient is diagnosed early, the tumor is typically surgically removed and the patient is then tested and re-tested. If after some time the test does not detect any cancer, the patient is then considered cancer-free.
