In reference to the concept of the “Thucydides Trap” and with the aim of improving communication, I propose a new term — the “SEL Trap” — and hereby introduce it for the first time. The term describes a pattern of societal dynamics that emerges when the economic situation of a population deteriorates — for example, as a result of declining resources, growing distributional conflicts, or increasing material insecurity. Under such conditions, the likelihood of political and social radicalization rises.
In this process, many people increasingly narrow their focus to securing the well‑being of their immediate social environment: first their own family, then their neighborhood, their region, and ultimately the entire state or economic area. At the same time, there is a growing tendency to perceive external groups or influences as threats and to respond to them with rejection or hostility.
