The purpose of going to college or university is to graduate, but at the same time, almost noone else is supporting a student’s tuition fee, so either go pro now and graduate later, or do the Kobe and LeBron way which is bypassing the college leprechaun rules.
Weird NCAA rules that screw college players twice over. Not only are college players poorly paid or unpaid by schools, they are also prevented from getting paid outside school.
Michael Zheng is poised to spark an important conversation within the NCAA regarding prize money. Under current NCAA regulations, college athletes are prohibited from accepting prize money while enrolled at a university. If Zheng, who plans to return to Columbia next year, chooses to go back to school, he would be required to forfeit his $225,000 in prize earnings—assuming the rule remains unchanged. However, with NIL compensation becoming increasingly prominent across college sports, it would not be surprising to see this policy revisited. That possibility grows even more likely if Zheng advances to the next round, where his prize money would increase to $327,750.
If he is winning that much couldn’t he just drop off the ncaa scheme and pay his own university fees?
Like I have heard someone say, and I say it now often, “If you see common sense things not being done – it’s because a person, entity, or group of people want it to be that way.” There is no reason that these outdated and nonsensical rules for college students still exist unless they purposely do not want to change it.
Simple hold the money in escrow and then the player can borrow against it or just sue the NCAA.
