Yes, in Gone with the Wind I liked Melanie’s approach-believe your husband, don’t listen to gossip, and let him talk to whoever. And only believe your partner has cheated if he confesses. Hard to do, but I believe it is the best approach. Let your partner build relationships in his life.
Of course, we don’t know the dynamics of JLo and Ben’s relationship. There could be a dozen of factors at play and maybe she is right if she is controlling. Maybe she’s trying to prevent him from spiraling, we don’t know.

Ben is attracted to drama – just like Jlo. If there is nothing wrong they would create another problem. Neither one needs to ever be in any relationships until they get their brains unscrambled AND they deal with all the drama they inflict on their children and ex-partners.
